Tzu Chi helps save life of former Singapore official's son

June 10, 2011

Taiwan-based Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation helped save the life of former Singapore Foreign Minister George Yeo’s son last month by organizing a bone marrow donation.

Following the successful transplant procedure, Yeo and his family paid a visit to Tzu Chi founder Dharma Master Cheng Yen to express their gratitude for its assistance.

Cheng, 73, said people who have means and help those who are in need are the happiest in the world. “I am extremely pleased to see that Yeo's son has recovered and he is full of gratitude for the people who donate marrow.”

According to Yeo, he went just about everywhere to find a suitable bone marrow donor for his son, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2009.

“I approached relatives and paid visits to Hong Kong and Singapore, but was unable to find a match,” Yeo said. “Tzu Chi came through when all hope was lost and found a match.”

Yeo said he hoped to express appreciation to the donor in person and made a donation to Tzu Chi to express his appreciation to the organization and admiration of the work it carries out.
